September 2018 Meeting

The History of Feminism: A Letter to the Next Generation

Saturday September 8, 2018, Golden Sails Inn

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt
More then a hundred year ago, women in American dreamed of equal political status with men; dreamed of equal legal rights. Now women dream of equal pay and opportunity in a harassment free workplace. Women, despite legal and cultural barriers, have been actively engaged in every phase of the nation’s history. Women have helped shape the political, social, legal and economic life of our country. To fully appreciate the challenges faced by women today, the pro-gram looks at the lessons learned from the women’s rights movement. What do those changes say about us as a society today? How will a new generation of young women shape their future?

Leading our program will be Dr. Virginia “Ginny” L. Baxter, Long Beach community leader and member of the LBCCD Board of Trustees. In her over 42 years in education, Ginny served as a Professor of History, most notably developing and teaching a class in the “History of American Women”. She went on to be Asst. Dean of Stu-dent Affairs, Women’s Advisor and in 1983 began her tenure as Executive Director of the LBCC Foundation. Resources were raised for student scholarships, departmental grants, campus beautification and construction, including a major fundraising campaign that raised more than $6.3 million for an endowment creating the Long Beach College Promise scholarships, which provides a free first semester to every Long Beach area high school graduate. More than 4000 students have received the tuition scholarships.

Ginny has been recognized for her outstanding work including: LBCC’s “Outstanding Colleague Award”, Soroptimist International of Long Beach’s “Woman of Distinction in Education Award”, California Conference for Equality and Justice’s “Humanitarian Award”, and LB Press Telegram’s “Amazing Women, Education Award”. In her spare time Ginny created a new business, Ginny’s Getaways which combines her love of travel and students; the trips are used to raise money to support different charities and scholarship funds. She has been a member of AAUW for more than 30 years and has helped with arrangements for the annual AAUW STEM conference held at LBCC. Plan to come and hear what we want the next generation to learn!
